Corbin learns to walk

We knew Corbin was capable, he just wasn’t motivated…until today. Now look, just 2 days after his first birthday and he’s walking! Not completely on his own yet, but he’s learning quick. It’s crazy! Last week he was perfectly content to sit and play or stand and today he’s using a toy to walk around the living room. Amazing…simply amazing.

Corbin is a year old today…and what a great year it has been. He just started cruising, has 6 teeth, loves to walk when holding our hands, claps his hands and waves (sometimes), is still quite social and especially loves the attention from other children. We just love him dearly. He’s the sweetest and funniest baby…now toddler I suppose.

This year my birthday fell on Thanksgiving. Not such a bad deal considering I get to hang out with my family and feast on yummy food all day. The other bonus is that I get to sleep in because my husband has the day off. Extra sleep is one the best gifts he can ever give me.

Just as I expected, the entire day consisted of food, food and more food. Gotta love it! Luke made me chocolate chip pancakes in the morning and we started our Thanksgiving feast at 2pm. Needless to say, we were stuffed. The sad thing is, but 8 o’clock we were starving again and made quesadillas for dinner. Funny how that happens…you think we can’t eat one more bite and then a few hours later your hungry again.

Corbin’s 1st Birthday Party

On Saturday we celebrated Corbin’s 1st birthday with some friends and family at the Aztec Park in La Mesa. It was kind of a last minute decision to have his party early, but I think it was a good choice. My biggest concern was whether or not the weather would cooperate and it ended up being a beautiful day.

Watching Corbin play with all his friends, Mordecai, Noah, Elliott and Quintin was so adorable. They are all a couple weeks &/or a few months apart and they are all at different development stages. Oh, and talking about development stages, Corbin started to get the itch to start moving around. He almost crawled and started waving at people at his party. We were all excited about his new skills and tried to motivate him to continue to show them off. We all knew he’d surprise us, I just didn’t know he’d do so much in a weeks time.

Cake time was uneventful. I imagined he’d grab the cupcake and cram it into his mouth once he got a taste of the frosting, but that was just not the case. He could really care less. He would have thrown it on the ground if I wasn’t right next to him and keeping an eye on it. At least he took one bite for picture sake.

Kimberly met me at a park down the street from my house and I took her daughters 11 month photos. It’s hard to believe she’s only a day younger than Corbin. She only weighs 14lbs…almost 1/2 the weight of my son.

Corbin: energetic, funny, loving, curious, laughs and smiles constantly, makes friends easily, easy going, loves riding in the stroller and taking in the scenery, ridiculously picky about the consistency of his food, claps his hands, has five teeth, gets frustrated when he rolls onto his tummy, and the camera love him.

There are so many other fun things about Corbin that we love. He is truly a joy to be around.

Halloween 2008

This year we were able to enjoy Halloween a little more now that we have Corbin in our lives. I guess there is something about dressing up your child in cute costumes that brings a new excitement to an event. This year Corbin was a dalmatian as well as a ninja. I know…why two costumes??? Well, Luke’s work goes all out for Halloween and they decided to recreate the 101 dalmatians and Corbin and I were able to dress up in dalmatian costumes and participate. They won 1st place by the way. Go team! The ninja costume was a great find back in September when we were browsing through Old Navy. The price was right and the costume was adorable…we couldn’t resist.

We went over to my brother’s for Halloween as we have the last few years. Even though we didn’t have kids in past years, it was still fun to walk around with my nieces as they got their trick or treat on. This year was Corbin’s first year to join the girls and surprisingly he did great even after staying up two hours past his normal bedtime. The girls looked after Corbin and made sure he got some candy too. He doesn’t get to eat any of it, but he doesn’t know any better. He just liked all the attention he got.

Our missional community was asked this past week by Brandon who leads our discussions, “what scripture brings you comfort?” For me, I’d say

8 But you, Israel, my servant,
Jacob, whom I have chosen,
the offspring of Abraham, my friend;
9 you whom I took from the ends of the earth,
and called from its farthest corners,
saying to you, “You are my servant,
I have chosen you and not cast you off”;
10 fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

11 Behold, all who are incensed against you
shall be put to shame and confounded;
those who strive against you
shall be as nothing and shall perish.
12 You shall seek those who contend with you,
but you shall not find them;
those who war against you
shall be as nothing at all.

I’m a mover and a shaker in general, and this is particularly true when I’m on a shoot. I’m twistin’ and turnin’, climbin’ and jumpin’ and to top it all off, I DO NOT have a steady hand, plain.and.simple.

As often as possible I opt for lenses with VR (Vibration Reduction) or IS (Image Stabilization). You pay a pretty penny for this feature. For me, it’s worth the extra cost, and for the point I’m at in my photography it’s a reasonable expense. But that wasn’t always the case, and what about uber slow shutter speeds with no tripod. No IS or VR can hold up under pressure like that. . .no matter how magical they may be. . . and magical they are, trust you me.

A picnic lunch

Once a week, Corbin and I like to visit my mom. On this particular day we decided to order a sub sandwich from Lenardo Pizzeria and have a little picnic at Nancy Jane Park near her home. It was a gorgeous day and perfect for a picnic.

After we picked up our food, we headed over to the park. We found a nice shaded parking spot, parked, and went on a search for the perfect picnic location. Under a huge pine tree is where we found our resting place.

With our tummies full and rested awhile, we decided to pack things up and head over to the swings. Corbin had loved the swings at other parks we’ve been to, so I thought my mom would enjoy seeing Corbin laugh and squeal with delight as he swung back and forth on the swings. She did. We enjoyed finding ways to make him laugh. We’d chase him and we’d count to 3 while getting closer and showing him our tickle fingers…it was fun.

Oma’s Pumpkin Patch

Today we had the Oma Pumpkin Patch experience. About 10 friends and their kids met us at the Van Ommering Dairy Farm in Lakeside. It was a little hectic throughout our stay, but we ended up having fun in the process. They have a ton of activities to keep kids occupied for hours…especially kids ages 3-10. We went on a hay ride and saw lots of cows, ate lunch and played the afternoon away.

I heard Corbin wake and after waiting a few moments, I went in to get him. When I opened the door and peeked over the crib railing this is how I found him (see photo). He had turned himself sideways, pulled his socks off, pulled part of the bumper down and was talking to himself. What a funny boy.

This past weekend we were able to get out of town and visit Luke’s family up in Hesperia. While we were there I was able to wear a turtleneck and sweater which made me extremely happy. We also made Luke’s moms famous chocolate chips cookies (more like scones with all the flour she adds…hehe), visited a pumpkin patch and walked thru a corn maze, hung out with the Shiras and Divine family, ate lots of food and relaxed. It was good to get away.

I am feeling a bit blah today. I can’t exactly pin point why because I think it’s an accumulation of little and big things. In a few months I will be turning 30, my baby will be turning 1, the finances are getting tighter and are praying and seeking Gods provision, my spiritual walk is shaky right now…maybe it’s hormones. Ha-ha, what a copout. I especially cannot stand the weather right now. It’s October and it was 96 degrees at my house yesterday. I have a feeling we won’t see much of fall this year and we’ll jump right into winter. Sucky! Oh, I want to cry. I know all these things are totally circumstantial and I need to let it all go. Only Christ can fully sustain me…just shows my disbelief I suppose and especially my need for Christ. I just want to yell sometimes “Why God! Why do we have to go through these trials? Why do you have to strip us of everything?” of course I know why…because Jesus needs to be our all and material objects will not suffice…because trials help us to grow in our faith and give us perseverance. Lord, help that to be real in my heart and not just words. I confess, my BIG idol is comfort. When I feel comfortable, I feel loved and taken care of. My struggle is feeling content in all circumstances. When we have “0″ in the bank or when we have plenty. I also struggle because I lack joy in all circumstances. I tend to be an optimistic person , but when my world is shaken, I find that I quickly get depressed. Not like I need medication depressed, just overwhelmed with my feelings. During these small relapses, I still preach the gospel to myself and remind myself of Christ’s everlasting love for me, but a piece is still missing because I am lacking the joy that those people get when they lose everything and they still have this glow about them, true joy and peace. I’m a work in progress…that’s what I like to say. Slowly I believe these issues will be worked out…it may take longer than I’d like, but it’s still progress.
