Making Baby Food

posted in Whatever |

Have you ever bought or even glanced at the prices of baby food lately? Well, I have. It’s insane how much they charge you for a little jar of baby food. Most stores charge anywhere between .75-1.00 per jar/container and babies eat up to three times a day…think about it…that could add up to quite a lot of money.

As I now venture into my new career as stay at home mom, I have made a conscience effort to save money. One of my eye opening moments was about a month ago when I was at Albertson’s and I was holding a jar of carrots and looked at the ingredients. To my surprise it said “carrots, water”…yea, that’s it! As happy as I was that the jar I was holding did not contain other additives, my mind was made up. I didn’t have the Super Baby Food book yet, but I was going to walk back over to the produce department, pick up carrots, sweet potatoes and butternut squash and go online when I got home and figure it out.

When I got home I found a great website called Wholesome Baby Food. I found everything I needed to confidently make my own baby food. They also have recipes, age appropriate charts for specific foods…it’s great. I highly recommend this site. I still plan on buying the Super Baby Food book especially for all the recipes and background information, but for now I am excited that I found a website that has all the immediate information I need right now.

Just in case you don’t believe that making baby food is easy, let me explain what you need to do to make carrots. Steam or boil cut up carrots until soft. Put into food processor and puree. You can add water &/or the water from pan you steamed or boiled the carrots if desired. Once pureed, scoop into an ice cube tray(s) and freeze. Once frozen, put carrot cubes into freeze bags. When you want to feed your baby, take a couple cubes out and place into microwave for 45 seconds and it’s ready to be served. It’s really that easy.

I challenge you to make your own baby food. Your incentive, well, you’ll save money, you won’t worry about what’s in your baby’s food and you’ll feel accomplished.
